Your Child’s First Dental Visit: What to Expect and How to Prepare
Your child’s first dental visit is a big deal, and how it goes can shape how they feel about the dentist for years to come. The good news is that with a little preparation and the right pediatric dental team, most kids leave their first visit smiling.
Here’s what to expect at Kidztopia Dental & Braces and how to get your little one ready.
When Should the First Visit Happen?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends the first dental visit by age 1, or within 6 months of the first tooth coming in.
This might feel early, but there are good reasons to start young:
Cavities can start as soon as teeth appear. Early visits help catch problems before they become painful or more complicated.
Kids who start young are more likely to feel comfortable at the dentist because their first visit is not associated with pain or fear.
We can guide you on brushing, feeding, thumb-sucking, and other habits that affect dental development.
What Happens During a First Visit at Kidztopia?
At Kidztopia Dental & Braces in Los Angeles, we’ve designed our office to feel like a fun, kid-friendly experience rather than a medical appointment.
Here’s what to expect:
A friendly welcome: Your child meets our team in a colorful, kid-focused environment. We give them time to look around and get comfortable.
A gentle exam: We look at your child’s teeth, gums, jaw, and bite, and count their teeth. For very young children, this is often done with your child sitting on your lap.
Cleaning if age-appropriate: If your child has enough teeth and is comfortable, we may do a gentle cleaning and apply fluoride.
X-rays if needed: Not every young child needs X-rays at the first visit. If your child does, we use kid-sized equipment and keep radiation exposure as low as possible. Our FREE Exam & X-Ray offer covers this for new patients.
A conversation with you: We walk you through what we saw, answer your questions, and provide guidance on brushing, diet, and oral habits.
A prize: Every child leaves with a small treasure to celebrate their visit.
The whole visit typically takes about 30 to 45 minutes.
How to Prepare Your Child
A little preparation goes a long way:
Use positive, simple language: Tell your child, “The dentist is going to count your teeth and help keep them strong.” Avoid words like “hurt,” “shot,” or “drill.”
Read a children’s book about the dentist: Familiar stories can make the experience feel less intimidating.
Play pretend dentist at home: Take turns being the dentist and patient using a toothbrush and small mirror.
Schedule at a good time: Choose a time when your child is usually well-rested and not overly hungry or tired.
Bring a comfort item: A favorite stuffed animal or blanket can help your child feel more secure.
Stay calm yourself: Children often pick up on a parent’s anxiety. If you’re relaxed, they’re more likely to feel relaxed too.
What to Bring
Your child’s insurance card, if applicable

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends the first visit by age 1 or within 6 months of the first tooth. Early visits let us catch cavities early, guide you on brushing and feeding habits, and help your child become comfortable with the dental office before they need any treatment.
That’s completely normal, and our team is trained to handle it. We move at your child’s pace, and we never force anything. Some visits take longer, some we do in stages. The goal of the first visit is to build a positive experience, not to complete every task.
Not always. For very young children, we often skip x-rays unless there’s a specific reason to take them. Once your child has enough teeth and can hold still, we may recommend x-rays to check for cavities between teeth or to monitor tooth development. Our FREE Exam & X-Ray offer for new patients covers x-rays when they’re needed.
New patients at Kidztopia Dental & Braces qualify for our FREE Exam & X-Ray offer, which covers the initial visit. We accept most major insurance plans. Insurance and other restrictions apply. Call 323-410-4401 to verify your specific coverage.
